Celebrating Hinamatsuri at the Consul General's Residence
On February 28, 2025, Consul General Yoshinori Kodama graciously opened his residence to the Japan-America Society of Hawaii for our annual Hinamatsuri celebration in honor of Girl’s Day. It was a truly special gathering, with approximately 40 guests coming together to celebrate this cherished tradition.
Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival), also known as Momo-no-sekku (Peach Festival), is traditionally observed by Japanese families to wish for the happiness and healthy growth of their daughters. Homes are adorned with elegant hina ningyo, dolls dressed in ancient court costumes from the Heian Period (794-1185), displayed in a tiered arrangement.
JASH President Reyna Kaneko opened the program with welcoming remarks, followed by a heartfelt presentation on the meaning of Hinamatsuri by Mrs. Ikuko Kodama. Guests also enjoyed a special message from Kazuko Love, Tomodachi co-chair, reflecting on the significance of this festival and the enjoyment among the guests each year.
A highlight of the evening was a delightful sing-along session led by Ms. Saki Michaels. Attendees joined in singing traditional Hinamatsuri songs, including:
青い星の上で (Aoi Hoshi no Ue de) - On This Blue Star
朧月夜 (Oborozukiyo) - Hazy Moonlit Night
うれしいひなまつり (Ureshii Hinamatsuri) - Happy Doll’s Festival
We also enjoyed an origami session, creating hina dolls with Jenna Nakagawa, a JASH NexGen (Next Generation) member. This hands-on activity added a creative and interactive element to the evening, allowing guests to take home a special keepsake.
A heartfelt MAHALO to our wonderful volunteers and the dedicated staff of the Japanese Consulate, including Consulate Chef Ito, for preparing a delicious array of dishes that added to the festive atmosphere. Their generosity and hospitality made this event truly special.
We look forward to celebrating Hinamatsuri again next year!
