Sadako Peace Projects Summer-Fall Recap

The Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) collaborates with Pacific Historic Parks (PHP) to organize the Sadako Peace Projects at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial once a month during the academic school year. This past summer, we held two special project dates: July 13 and August 18. In addition, we held our fall project date on September 28. Volunteers shared the inspiring story of Sadako Sasaki and her message of world peace with visitors to the memorial. Attendees not only learn the art of folding peace cranes but also have the opportunity to take home cranes folded by students in Japan! These donated cranes are folded and sent to JASH as part of lessons on world history and peace studies, coordinated by teachers in Japan.

On July 13, we were joined by members of the 72nd Cherry Blossom Festival Court. They did a fantastic job interacting with visitors from the continental US and various other countries. We shared peace cranes with visitors donated by Mino Saitono Oka Gakuen (Osaka), Moka Hokuryo High School (Tochigi), and Kodaira Nishi High School (Tokyo).

On August 18, we welcomed a special group of student volunteers consisting of high school and university students from Hiroshima and our 2024 Hiroshima Peace Scholars and Chaperone. The students from Hiroshima were grateful for the opportunity to interact with visitors to Pearl Harbor and look forward to sharing their experiences back home. We shared peace cranes with visitors donated by Nagao Junior High School (Fukuoka), Musashino 6th Junior High School (Tokyo), Hiroshima Satsukigaoka Junior High School (Hiroshima).

On September 28, we were joined by a group of volunteers from Waipahu High School, University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa), and Brigham Young University–Hawaii (BYUH). They did an awesome job sharing Sadako Sasaki’s story with visitors from the continental US, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. We shared peace cranes donated by Ibaraki Mito Daini Senior High School (Ibaraki) and Chigasaki City.
