JASH Japan Wizards Competition Sends 2023 Teams to Japan this Past Summer
On February 25, 2023, 108 students representing 18 high schools from Oahu, Hawaii, and Maui participated in the 20th Annual Japan-America Society of Hawaii’s (JASH) Japan Wizards Statewide Academic Team Competition (JWC) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Campus Center. The winning students and their advisors traveled to Japan this past summer to experience firsthand what they studied in their classrooms and independent research.

After a prolonged period of travel restrictions due to the pandemic, the winning teams of the 2020-2022 Japan Wizards Competitions finally had the opportunity to travel to Japan this past year.
2023 EPIC High School Exchange Program Students Visit Hawaii
From September 29-October 3, 2023, eight students from various Ehime high schools traveled to Hawaii to participate in a cultural exchange hosted by the Ehime Prefectural International Center (EPIC), which promotes cultural understanding and international cooperation through various programs and exchanges.

Peace Scholars Welcomed in Hiroshima
Our 2023 Hiroshima Peace Scholars, Yuuka Brown of Kalani High School and Reina Gammarino of Punahou School traveled to Hiroshima from July 30 to August 9 to learn about the history of World War II, learn from hibakusha atomic bomb survivors, and discuss current events and peacebuilding activities with their peers in Japan.
Hawaii’s Junior Ambassadors at the 35th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention in Fukuoka, Japan
This July, our four Junior Ambassadors (JAs) for the 35th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) traveled to Fukuoka with chaperone Sandy Takeda and Bridge Club Hawaii (BCH) President Betsy Wo to represent Hawaii at the ten-day international children’s camp and homestay.

APCC Junior Ambassadors Prepare for Fukuoka
Our four Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) Junior Ambassadors (JAs), chaperone Sandy Takeda, and Bridge Club Hawaii President Betsy Wo were busy this quarter preparing for their trip to Fukuoka, Japan! They met twice a month at the JASH Office to learn about Japanese food, culture, daily life, and homestay expectations.
Peace Scholars Prepare for Hiroshima
As part of their preparations for their summer study trip, HPS scholars have been attending monthly educational workshops. They have been learning about the history of World War II in the US and Japan; practicing how to share their perspectives to the media; and working on research projects that they will present in Hiroshima.
Japan-In-A-Suitcase Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
On May 24, 2023, an appreciation luncheon was held at Kanoya Sushi Grill and Bar for Japan-
in-a-Suitcase (JIAS) volunteers. Thanks to their help, 49 presentations were given to 1,116
students during the 2022-2023 school year.
Ehime Maru Memorial Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the Ehime Maru Memorial Association (EMMA) hosted a special luncheon via Zoom celebrating the efforts of our dedicated volunteers from local Japanese American community groups who have donated numerous hours of service to clean and maintain the Ehime Maru Memorial in Kakaʻako Waterfront Park. Thanks to weekly cleaning by these volunteers, the memorial remains pristine after over 20 years to honor the memories of those who were lost in the tragic accident.
Youth Artists Spread Peace at Sadako Peace Projects
On March 25, 2023, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii in collaboration with Pacific Historic Parks welcomed the cast of Ohana Arts’ “Peace On Your Wings” as volunteers for our Sadako Peace Projects at Pearl Harbor National Memorial. “Peace On Your Wings” is inspired by the real-life story of Sadako Sasaki and her one-thousand paper cranes, sharing her message of courage, love, and peace.
Junior Ambassadors Selected to Represent Hawaii at the 35th Asian-Pacific Children's Convention
The Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) is pleased to announce the selection of four Junior Ambassadors (JAs) to represent JASH and Hawaii at the 35th Annual Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) in Fukuoka, Japan in summer 2023. This year will be the first year JAs will be able to travel to Fukuoka since the 2019 program due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, February 9, 2023, the Ehime Maru Memorial Association (EMMA) held a remembrance ceremony for the 22nd anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Uwajima Fisheries High School training ship Ehime Maru at the Ehime Maru Memorial in Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park.
