4th JASH Language Exchange (JASH LangX)

On November 16, 2024, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) hosted its 3rd language exchange session, JASH-LangX, at the JASH office.

Approximately 15 participants—both JASH members and non-members—gathered to connect with one another while practicing English and Japanese in a friendly and supportive environment. JASH LangX offers a unique opportunity to meet new people, improve language skills, and learn about Japan, the U.S., and Hawaii, all while making new friends in a relaxed setting.

Attendees enjoyed communicating in two languages at the JASH Office

Event Highlights

The session started with a fun Circle Challenge Tournament icebreaker. Congratulations to the winners! Following the icebreaker, participants engaged in three conversation rounds:

  1. First Round: "Only in English" conversations

  2. Second Round: "Only in Japanese" conversations

  3. Final Round: A mix of English and Japanese, with optional conversational topics provided

This format allowed attendees to fully immerse themselves in each language while connecting with multiple partners.

A Welcoming Space for All

Participants represented a variety of backgrounds and language proficiency levels, but all shared a strong motivation to learn and connect through language. JASH LangX welcomes all levels, from beginner to advanced, creating a conversation-friendly space for everyone.

Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive:

  • Over 93% of participants strongly agreed with the statements, “I was satisfied with today’s language exchange session” and “I would like to participate in the next JASH Language Exchange session.”

  • Comments included:

    • "I enjoy speaking with native Japanese speakers and learning from them."

    • "JASHならではの素晴らしい試み!長く続けてください。ありがとう(This is a wonderful initiative unique to JASH! Please continue this program for a long time. Thank you!)"

    • "気兼ねなく英語を話す機会があまりないので、参加できて楽しかった(I rarely get opportunities to speak English without hesitation, so I had a great time participating.)"

Looking Ahead

Future JASH LangX sessions are planned for 2025 and will be held monthly or bi-monthly, including weekends and weekday evenings to suit diverse schedules.
