On March 8, 2024, Ambassador(AMB) Kurt Tong delivered a compelling talk on the 2024 Elections and Policy Trends Impacting Japan and the Indo-Pacific at the Pacific Club's Card Room. The event was a resounding success, drawing a full house of approximately 40 esteemed guests.

EHIME MARU MEMORIAL CEREMONY - FEBRUARY 9, 2024
On Friday, February 9, 2024, the Ehime Maru Memorial Association (EMMA) held a remembrance ceremony for the 23rd anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Uwajima Fisheries High School training ship Ehime Maru at the Ehime Maru Memorial in Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park. The Ehime Maru suffered the loss of nine lives, including four students, two teachers, and three crew members after it was unexpectedly struck by the USS Greeneville submarine.

HINAMATSURI 2024
On March 1, 2024, Consul General Yoshinori Kodama graciously opened his residence to the Japan-America Society of Hawaii for our annual Hinamatsuri celebration in honor of Girl’s Day. It was a very special occasion and a full house of approximately 40 guests.
Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival) also known as Momo-no-sekku (Peach Festival) is traditionally celebrated by Japanese families to wish for the happiness and healthy growth of their daughters. In homes, elegant dolls called hina ningyo dressed in ancient court costumes of the Heian Period (794-1185) are displayed.

JASH APCC Alumna Joanna Sato Selected for Special Peace Ambassador Program
The Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) is excited to announce Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) Alumna Joanna Sato has been selected to represent JASH and the Bridge Club of Hawaii (BCH) in the APCC’s Special Peace Ambassador Program for 2024. Joanna originally participated in the APCC as a Junior Ambassador in 2018.

New Year’s Reception 2024
On January 24, 2024, Governor Josh Green and First Lady Jaime Green graciously opened Washington Place to the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) for our annual New Year’s Reception celebration. To kick off the Year of the Dragon, JASH President Reyna Kaneko along with Governor Josh Green, Deputy Consul General Mikio Ozawa, Vice Admiral Blake Converse, JASH Board Chair Karen Knudsen, Deputy Managing Director Krishna Jayaram and Linda Rodrigues of Hilton Grand Vacations, Presenting Sponsor of the reception participated in the Kagami Wari ceremony to ring in the New Year.

10 High School Students Selected to Travel to Hokkaido

Tomodachi Holiday Tea
On Wednesday, December 6, 2023 the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) members gathered for the annual Tomodachi Holiday Tea at the Waioli Kitchen & Bake Shop nestled in Manoa Valley. Almost 20 members and newcomers to JASH reconnected and enjoyed each other’s company, while partaking delicious baked goods and beverages.

Peace Cranes Take Flight at Pearl Harbor
JASH welcomed volunteers from local high schools and community organizations to spread Sadako Sasaki’s message for peace at Pearl Harbor National Memorial in October and November 2023.

Japan-America Society of Hawaii Japan Day Fall 2023
On November 2, 2023, JASH held its Fall Japan Day program, sponsored by the McInerny Foundation and the Freeman Foundation. Approximately 200 students from Kalani High School, Kapaa High School, King Kekaulike High School, Konawaena High School, Pearl City High School, St. Joseph School, University Laboratory School, Waiakea High School, and Washington Middle School gathered at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii’s Generations Ballroom to enjoy the day’s activities.

JASH Japan Wizards Competition Sends 2023 Teams to Japan this Past Summer
On February 25, 2023, 108 students representing 18 high schools from Oahu, Hawaii, and Maui participated in the 20th Annual Japan-America Society of Hawaii’s (JASH) Japan Wizards Statewide Academic Team Competition (JWC) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Campus Center. The winning students and their advisors traveled to Japan this past summer to experience firsthand what they studied in their classrooms and independent research.

JASH Japan Wizards Competition Sends 2020-2022 Winning Teams to Japan in 2023
After a prolonged period of travel restrictions due to the pandemic, the winning teams of the 2020-2022 Japan Wizards Competitions finally had the opportunity to travel to Japan this past year.

2023 EPIC High School Exchange Program Students Visit Hawaii
From September 29-October 3, 2023, eight students from various Ehime high schools traveled to Hawaii to participate in a cultural exchange hosted by the Ehime Prefectural International Center (EPIC), which promotes cultural understanding and international cooperation through various programs and exchanges.

On October 4, 2023, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) had the honor of hosting the Japan-U.S. Military Program (JUMP) at the Official Residence of the Consul General of Japan in Honolulu.

Peace Scholars Welcomed in Hiroshima
Our 2023 Hiroshima Peace Scholars, Yuuka Brown of Kalani High School and Reina Gammarino of Punahou School traveled to Hiroshima from July 30 to August 9 to learn about the history of World War II, learn from hibakusha atomic bomb survivors, and discuss current events and peacebuilding activities with their peers in Japan.

Hawaii’s Junior Ambassadors at the 35th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention in Fukuoka, Japan
This July, our four Junior Ambassadors (JAs) for the 35th Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC) traveled to Fukuoka with chaperone Sandy Takeda and Bridge Club Hawaii (BCH) President Betsy Wo to represent Hawaii at the ten-day international children’s camp and homestay.

On Friday, June 30, 2023, JASH was honored to host an art workshop featuring Kiyomoto Ogasawara, 32nd generation of the Ogasawara-ryu school of archery, mounted archery, and Reiho (etiquette) of Japan.
